Thousands of VCE students woke to learn their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) on Monday morning.
From 7am, students across Geelong could find out their results, with the average ATAR for the state 70.33.
This year was the first for year 12s to get back into the classroom with no remote learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Students celebrate their success
Geelong students are revelling in their successes after receiving their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) on Monday.
Students from six Geelong schools achieved ATARs above 99, with high achievers in both independent and state schools.
The average ATAR across the state was 70.33, up from the 69.26 average of 2021.
Geelong High School’s Mason Blyth achieved an ATAR of 99.65.
He said it felt great to have the hard work pay off.
“It feels really good … to have met and exceeded my expectations, and being able to repay the work of my parents and the school as well,” he said.
“It was a good way to cap it all off.
“I was pretty wowed.
“It sort of felt like I knew it was quite a good score, but it is just a number.
“At the end of it, it was just me and a computer with a number on it.
“I did feel relief and satisfaction though.”
Mr Blyth said he hadn’t worked out his next move exactly, he was looking to do a science or engineering degree, doubled up with law.
“From there, I’m not sure, but I’ll figure it out,” he said.
Geelong College joint Dux Remy Locke, who along with Bailey Gait received an ATAR of 99.50, said it was “surreal” to have scored so high.
“It still hasn’t quite clicked in,” she said.
“I’m very overwhelmed and shocked.
“I’m very happy, and very proud.
“It’s been a pretty hectic year but very enjoyable.”
Next year, Ms Locke is hoping to study science at Melbourne University, then go on to do honours in veterinary medicine.
Ms Gait said it “feels amazing” to be done with study and looking to the future.
“It’s very relieving and satisfying,” she said.
“It was the perfect way of finishing everything, and on such a positive note as well.
“I opened my results by myself in my room, and I just cried.
“I’m really proud – it’s taken a long time, obviously not just this year alone.”
Ms Gait said next year she was hoping to do Biomedicine at Melbourne University.
“Afterwards I’ll either stay here or go over to England to study dentistry and orthodontics,” she said.
“I’m really excited for everything to come.”
Principals from secondary school across the region congratulated graduates on a terrific result, and wished them the best for their futures.
