The Fred Hollows Foundation is on the lookout for young Territorians who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness, with hopes of finding 2024’s Humanity Award recipient.
To mark what would have been Fred Hollows’ 95th birthday this year, nominations for the award opened in April, with parents, teachers, principals and community members encouraged to nominate a child in year 6 who is making a difference in their world.
One Junior Ambassador from each state and territory will be named at a ceremony during Term 4 of the school year, with the Humanitarian of the Year to be announced thereafter.
For her contributions to aged care facilities, Jorja Zelley of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School was named The Foundation’s 2023 NT Junior Ambassador.
Jorja’s mother, Chrissy Zelley, said her daughter had a particularly “strong connection” to First Nations people.
“She is empathetic to all human beings – she has a strong connection to Aboriginal people having spent up to age nine living in Katherine with parents who trained in very remote Aboriginal communities,” she said.
“Jorja volunteers at aged care facilities and participates in many philanthropic causes.”
The NT Junior Ambassador will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, donated by the award’s charity partner Specsavers, to The Foundation’s global footprint of work to end avoidable blindness.
Since its inception in 2012, thousands of students have been celebrated for the positive differences they make in their community
Nominations close Sunday, July 21, 2024.
