A Red Centre river is set to run again in 2024 – but not with water – as organisers start setting up the field for a dry river regatta.
After a turbulent few weeks – where the event was cancelled at one point – organisers are now getting the Todd River ready for this years Henley on Todd Regatta.
With the event beginning on Saturday, August 17 at 11.30am, Commodore Lester Hamilton and helpers are already out on the riverbed in Alice Springs getting things in place for the big day.
But this year’s Henley is set to be scaled back, with the parade through town cut due to funding issues, Mr Hamilton said.
He did however, reveal a bit more about this year’s planned “secret event” – set to be called “sink the boat”.
“It’s a rugby game on a boat on the river, and it looks like it’s going to be an international event, with a team coming in from Fiji,” he said.
“It’s got a nautical theme to it, but its rugby, it’s tug of war, and there’s going to be a lot of big grunting men out here working hard.”
With one week to go, Mr Hamilton said volunteers for the event were still needed, and encouraged anyone interested to sign up.
“Just jump on the website and fill out the form there, and you can be a volunteer and have a very fulfilling day,” he said.
