The Serious Crime Squad are investigating a suspected arson in Palmerston after a home was damaged in a fire on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the house on Driver Ave at 11.40am, with police arriving first and helping extinguish the blaze.

Early reports found the building was “extensively damaged” but on Wednesday Acting Deputy Commissioner Michael White said the fire was swiftly contained.

“I believe the damage was limited because, luckily, the responding police got there really quickly and were able to intervene and prevent further damage before the fire service got there,” he said.

“At the time the house was unoccupied and investigations have indicated that the fire is suspicious and we’re calling for members of the public that have any information to come forward and contact police.”

Investigators are requesting that anyone with knowledge of the blaze or dashcam footage of the area from 6am to 1pm on Monday comes forward.

It is the second reported house fire in less than a week.

Anyone with information should contact police and quote reference number 10375754.
