AT long last Palmerston has given its fans reason to celebrate, the Magpies recording their first win of the season over Wanderers.
The black-and-whites triumphed 14.9 (93) to 13.7 (85) in a gutsy performance.
Wanderers tall forward Joel Jeffrey (two goals) was unstoppable in the first
term and with livewire midfielder Beau O’Connell constantly feeding his key
forward, the Eagles looked more polished.
To their credit Palmerston chased hard, and with a scrambling defence and winning ruck they stayed in the game.
Persistence paid dividends early in the second quarter when Magpie playing-coach Alwyn Davey dribbled through a goal to give his team the lead .
Big Palmerston forward Leigh Williams added to the goal tally a short time later.
The Magpies wastefully peppered away at the goals but the speedy O’Connell, with
some individual brilliance, goaled with precision and kept his team in touch.
And when Edward Colley also goaled the Muk Muks hit the front late in the
half.
In a seesawing affair, Jonty Patrick put the Magpies in front early in the third,
then it was opportunist Eagle Simon Bates who tipped the scales in Wanderers’
favour.
Palmerston regained the lead after goals from Riley Stone and Keidan
Holt-Tubbs.
A 65m shot from rangy Magpie Clifford Timms ensured the Palmo camp led at three-quarter time.
Magpie big man Jack Berry was positioned in the goalsquare at the start of the
final term and the move paid immediate dividends after he marked and
goaled.
When Timms added another, Palmerston had some breathing space.
A big mark and goal to Joel Jeffrey gave Wanderers hope but Palmerston rallied and
got the points they have worked so hard for according to their coach.
“Great win by the boys – we’ve persisted all year with the young lads and
today we had about seven under 18 players and to their credit they are getting
better and better every week,” Davey said.
