A man was on bail for other violent offending when he made a plan to lure another man to a driveway and attack him in a shock assault while armed with a weapon.

Dylan Ray Glover appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Monday morning where he was supported by his current partner at the back of the courtroom.

Police prosecutor Lisa Plessius said on October 16, 2022 the victim, another man, visited a friend on Gordon Street in Garbutt and parked at the front of the unit before he saw Glover running towards him with a machete.

The victim sat in the driver’s seat as the 30-year-old smashed the front windscreen of the car, then smashed the driver’s seat window shattering glass all over the man, the court was told.

Glover continued to smash every window including the headlights and tail lights and swung towards the man who managed to avoid the swing, and the machete became lodged in the vehicle.

Ms Plessius said the victim was visiting a friend who was Glover’s ex-girlfriend and when police conducted further investigations they discovered Glover had lured the victim to the unit by forcing his ex to message him asking to meet up.

The ex was not accused of any wrongdoing.

“He was lying in wait for him to arrive,” the prosecutor said.

“His conduct is a serious example of all three offences.

“While it’s fortunate the complainant didn’t suffer any injuries, it was a very serious example of common assault and it would have caused immense fear to the complainant.”

She told the court Glover was sentenced to 12 months jail in July 2023 for violent offending and that he failed to appear at the last hearing for the current matters, hence the long wait for it to be finalised.

Defence lawyer Lisa McNamara from Stevenson and McNamara Lawyers said it was to her client’s credit he remained out of trouble for some time.

She said the father of two was currently unemployed but had been working in the mines at the time of the hearing which is why he didn’t attend.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan noted the man had been on bail for serious assault of a police officer and at the time he had 279 days of pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

Glover pleaded guilty to going armed to cause fear, wilful damage and assault. He had originally also been charged with stealing however was dismissed of that charge at the beginning of the proceeding.

He was sentenced to nine months jail with an immediate parole release date.
