LISA Roberts won her second Colleen Gwynne Medal as the best player in the NTFL’s Women’s Premier League on Sunday night.
It was when she was stepping down from the presentation dais that she declared her intention to get Waratah back to the top of the premiership tree.
It was a mixed weekend for the six-time Waratah premiership player. A losing grand finalist on Saturday night and a league best and fairest winner a day later.
“It was a surprise, I wasn’t expecting that at all, especially when I was more concerned with the grand final loss and where we go from here,’’ Roberts told the NT News.
“The calibre of players and teams across the competition now made it a tough season for everyone, so even though I’m surprised, I’m also really proud.
“I don’t know how it happened, the champagne had flowed freely through the night and when I wasn’t expecting to get up on stage it made it taste pretty good.’’
Roberts, joint captain in 2019-20 with Lauren O’Shea, found herself in a new role through the middle of the ground as opposed to previous seasons in defence.
“That was my role, mainly starting in the middle and rotating through the forward line after (coach) Trudie (Hopgood) gave me the task.
“I kicked 20 goals in a breakout season for me and it was something I really enjoyed.’’
Roberts baulked at talk the great Waratah era where they have played in the last nine WPL grand finals was over.
“End of an era? I certainly hope not, I’m certainly going to be working towards coming back next season to see if we can take the premiership cup back.
“The competition’s of a high standard and it’s going to be a lot harder to win, but we’re already working on getting back out there on grand final day.’’
