Dual businesses Korea Mart and Kosmetic Box open in Fairfield Central

Dual businesses catering to Townsville’s surging interest in Korean culture are kicking off their grand opening celebrations this weekend. Read about their unique offering.

Capitalising on the surging interest in Korean culture, and Townsville’s fast-growing Korean population, an exciting new business offering imported groceries and cosmetics has opened at Fairfield Central shopping centre.

Over the past decade, Townsville businessman and founder of Kcook Food, Tak Lee, has opened several Korean cuisine restaurants around the city including the CBD’s Zizigo and Coo. King, Castletown’s Chi. King and Dalgona, and Easygo at the Willows.

To better store products and distribute them to his venues, Mr Lee decided to open the dual businesses of Korea Mart – a supermarket which sells over 2,300 Korean grocery items – alongside Kosmetic Box, which offers over 300 Korean cosmetic items.

“As a Korean, I want to do something for the Korean community, so that’s why I chose (to open) Korean cuisine restaurants and a Korean supermarket,” Mr Lee said.

“I spent lots of money choosing a good shopping centre in a good area, good fit-out, and good interior.

“There are many Korean people living in Idalia … so all the Korean people can easily be supplied with Korean products.”

Korea Mart offers noodles, snacks, pre-made meal kits and desserts, teas, drinks, alcohol, frozen seafood, pork belly, Wagyu, ice cream, and produce sourced from nearby business Fairfield Fresh Market and Deli.

As Korean movies gained wider attention, he said plenty of customers were interested in eating Korean noodles – the store’s best selling products.

“We imported an instant noodle cooking machine, so the customer can grab the instant noodles and cook it themselves (in-store) using the induction machine with just one push of a button,” he said.

Cups with ice were supplied for store-bought drinks like iced lattes, and a microwave was also available to heat the store’s instant foods, which could then be consumed at the tables provided.

Renowned for their high quality, Kosmetic Box stocks a wide range of Korean cosmetics including face masks, mascara, lip sticks and balms, eyeliner, foundations, skin creams, and artificial nails.

With the younger generation “very interested in Korean cosmetics”, he said this was Townsville’s first physical store that people could visit to purchase the products.

Following the store’s soft-opened in early January, Lancini Property Group asset manager Debbie Gelling encouraged visitors to check out this weekend’s grand opening celebration, featuring food tasting, cooking demonstrations, discounts, and competitions.

“The store has already generated significant interest, with many regular and new customers making purchases. This new retail offering strengthens the centre’s diversity, enhancing the shopping experience for all visitors,” Ms Gelling said.
