Dashcam footage has reportedly shown the moment Victorian MP Tim Smith crashed his expensive Jaguar into a fence.

Mr Smith, the state Liberal MP for Kew, drove while drunk last month, crashing his car into a Hawthorn home. He returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.131 – more than twice the legal limit.

Mr Smith resisted initial calls for his resignation but finally fell on his sword after it was revealed that only a third of his Kew constituents believed he should remain in parliament.

Video posted on Twitter shows Mr Smith’s wreck out of the front window on the left hand side before the occupants doubled back to get a closer look at the crash.

“He crashed into a wall,” the male occupant said. “That’s embarrassing.”

“He’s knocked the sign over too,” the female occupant replied.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman at the time said it was believed Mr Smith’s vehicle collided with another before smashing into a fence.

In announcing his resignation, Mr Smith said he had made a “terrible error”.

“It was my mistake and my mistake alone,” he said. “In view of the response by the Leader of the Opposition, I believe it is in the best interest of the party that I do not contest the next election in Kew.”

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy commended Mr Smith for making the “honourable decision” to not seek preselection.

“Tim Smith’s decision today to not renominate for his seat of Kew is no doubt an exceedingly hard one, but it’s an honourable one and one that I support,” he said in a statement.

Mr Guy had previously said he had made it clear to his colleague, and friend, that he would not “find his way onto the frontbench of any parliamentary Liberal Party I lead”.

While Mr Smith stepped down from his role as Shadow Attorney-General immediately, he initially resisted calls to quit politics.

Mr Smith has lost his licence for 12 months.
