CONSISTENCY is Darwin cricketer Jake Weatherald’s main aim in his pursuit of excellence as a first class cricketer with South Australia.

The 25-year-old has established himself as an opening bat with the Redbacks, but he wants to add to his 39 matches in a red cap with more triple figure scores.

He fell agonisingly close to a double hundred in South Australia’s drawn match against Tasmania last week.

This morning Weatherald and his South Australian teammates are in Melbourne for a one-day match against Aaron Finch’s Victorians and the left-hander wants to add more runs to his resume.

“I need to start performing more consistently now by adding on to that 100 by making more of them,’’ he said.

“I’ve only made five now, hopefully I can make a few more than that, do it a bit more regularly and in the first innings where I can set my team up for a win.’’

Weatherald told the NT News he is seeing the ball ‘’pretty well’’ at the moment.

“In this game if you’re going to get out it’s generally early, even if you are in form and once I’ve got in I seem to kick on pretty well,’’ he added.

“All that’s good, but getting past those first 20 balls is always the most difficult.

Weatherald is aware a baggy green or limited overs yellow cap is up for grabs in a topsy turvy time for Australian cricketers.

“You never know when you’re playing first class cricket where it will go, you’re literally a couple of hundreds away from playing for your country,’’ he said.

“That shows with the recent Test selections where they are constantly chopping and changing the team and then there’s other formats.’’

But right now he is happy to be a part of the South Australian team.

Weatherald knows if you are not performing the selector’s axe can sever any ambitions very quickly.

“You have to take every game as it comes and concentrate on performing for your state,’’ he said.

“ It’s a bit of a cliche, but at the same time you don’t want to think too far ahead.

“With all the formats nowadays, you never know when your turn is going to come at international level.’’
