Video has captured the moment a machete-wielding man started chasing a group along Darwin’s party strip following a violent bust up.
The footage, which runs for about 30 seconds, shows a brawl on Mitchell Street in the CBD descend into chaos when a man pulls the large blade from within a vehicle and chases a group of men who scatter in different directions.
On Tuesday, police confirmed that around 2.30am on Sunday, July 14, emergency services responded to reports a 19-year-old man on Mitchell St was armed with an edged weapon and allegedly threatening a group.
The man fled the scene in a white vehicle and no injuries were reported.
Police later located the teenager and a weapon was seized, with authorities issuing the 19-year-old with a Notice to Appear for August 12.
Acting Superintendent Tanya Woodcock thanked witnesses for their reporting.
“Police would like to thank the witnesses who quickly provided information that was vital in identifying those involved in the offending,” she said.
“Investigations into the incident remain ongoing.”
On Tuesday, opposition leader Lia Finocchiaro labelled the incident “terrifying” and said the government was responsible.
“This terrifying vision of a man jumping out of a car with a machete and chasing people in the street shows crime remains absolutely out of control under Labor,” she said.
“Businesses along Mitchell Street, including hospitality and accommodation venues, have told us they are scared he could come back and are locking their doors to keep their staff safe.”
Police Minister Brent Potter confirmed he was aware of the incident and encouraged witnesses to assist authorities.
“In relation to that specific incident, I implore anyone who has video footage to hand it into police – that does assist with the apprehension (of the offender),” he said.
