A 22-year-old man is in a critical condition after being stabbed multiple times on Darwin City’s Mitchell St.

About 1.30am on Sunday, police received reports that a man had been assaulted with an edged weapon after approaching a vehicle on Mitchell St and speaking to the driver.

The alleged offender fled the scene in a silver Nissan Navara.

St John Ambulance attended the scene to find the victim had sustained three stab wounds and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

On Monday, Commander Danny Bacon fronted a press conference in Darwin and said verbal “unpleasantries” had been exchanged between the vehicle occupants and a pair of men standing on the road, before the alleged attack.

“That vehicle parked, the two people on the road engaged with the two male occupants in the vehicle (and) as a result of that engagement, (the) 22-year-old male that was standing on the roadway received three stab wounds with a sharp weapon.”

Commander Bacon confirmed a man had been charged in relation to the incident.

“The driver has been apprehended by police, he’s been charged for perverting the course of justice because he (allegedly) tried to hide the vehicle in-question,” he said.

“The person that committed the (assault) is currently outstanding and police are actively making inquiries to apprehend him.”

Commander Bacon said the victim and perpetrator were not known to each other.

“You could classify it as a road rage incident, but certainly alcohol was involved and a weapon was involved, so it’s a significant assault,” he said.

“The gentleman is in a critical condition in hospital and the outcome is not known.”

The 30-year-old charged man will face court in July.

Investigations remain ongoing and police urge anyone who witnessed the incident to make contact on 131 444 and quote job number P24168489.
