A shark has been caught off Nightcliff jetty in a “thrilling” experience for onlookers.
Last week, Dhruv Patel and his family were on Nightcliff jetty when they spotted a group of keen fisherman reeling in a particularly heavy catch.
On closer observation, Mr Patel realised the group of men were struggling with a shark.
“There was a whole group of fishermen and many others watching and then we realised it was a shark that had been caught,” Mr Patel said.
“(I have) no idea what shark it was – it was the colour white and the guys were struggling a lot to bring it in.”
Mr Patel caught the catch on film and said it was an experience he had never seen before.
“None of my family members or me had seen a shark be caught like this and we are from India and had never got a chance to explore,” he said.
“After 15 to 20 minutes of struggle the shark was tangled in the line – the fishermen cut the line, untangled it and released it back in the water.”
Shortly after, the same men caught a hammerhead shark which Mr Patel said was a “thrilling” experience for the kids.
“It was a great, thrilling experience to watch; everyone enjoyed it and especially the kids,” he said.
“The kids were very excited, some of them were kinda scared when the fishermen then caught a (baby) hammerhead shark.”
