Palmerston is set to host a slice of the Darwin Festival, featuring exciting music, arts, entertainment and a suite of high profile artists and comedians who will soon descend on the Top End.

The announcement of the new partnership took place on Wednesday, with Goyder Square confirmed to be the location in which a fun-packed weekend would run on August 16 and 17.

Darwin Festival Director Katie Fell said the special partnership marked a new chapter for the festival.

“Darwin Festival connects people through the love of music, arts, entertainment and culture,” she said.

“To be able to surprise, delight, and entertain the Palmerston community in their community is fantastic.”

The colourful weekend of events will include a Family Fiesta on August 16, featuring ARIA Award winners The Teeny Tiny Stevies, the 18-piece Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band, and a silent disco.

On August 17, Laugh Out Loud will feature some of the country’s highest profile stand-up comics, including Merrick Watts, Dilruk Jayasinha and Nikki Britton as well as local talent Kelly Gulliver.

City of Palmerston Mayor Athina Pascoe-Bell hailed the new partnership.

“We’re thrilled to host a special weekend of this year’s Darwin Festival right here in Palmerston,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Palmerston residents and visitors from neighbouring communities to experience an event in our own backyard, giving us a chance to highlight everything our vibrant community has to offer.”

Ms Pascoe-Bell said Palmerston had the means to host the event.

“With free and ample parking, convenient local accommodation, easy public transport access, and the boost it’ll give to our local businesses, this is a tremendous win for our community,” she said.

The full program of cabaret, theatre, comedy, dance and events will be announced on May 29.
