A Darwin Council contractor has been seriously injured after being hit in the face by a piece of metal thrown from a lawn mower.

Council chief executive Scott Waters said one of the council’s contractors was hit with a piece of metal that was thrown about 30m across Weddell Park in Parap from a lawn mower about 7.30am

“Quite a freak accident and quite unprecedented but one we’re working very closely with NT WorkSafe (on),” he said.

The man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“(It’s) very much unprecedented from council’s perspective and one in which we’ll understand in the investigation better to be able to work out how we can prevent this from happening in the future,” Mr Waters said.

“I think it was close to nearly lifesaving (first aid) work that was done.

“At the very least it was able to ensure the best chance of recovery was provided to the injured staff member so there was some great work that was done from first aid on hand.

“Ambulances attended immediately and it’s a very serious and quite unprecedented incident for us.
