NT Fire and Rescue Services Assistant Fire Chief Joshua Fischer said there hadn’t been an increase of structure fires.

“We’re at this point in time is that there’s been 63 structure fires year to date for 2022,” he said.

“Compared to 82 this time last year, the total of 2021 was 148 structure fires that occurred.

“We’ve seen a number of fires lately, that have unfortunately either burned significant portions of buildings or the entire building.

“There have been some accidental structure fires that have occurred, likely caused by incense and other things that have been left burning, and then have caught other items on fire.

“We haven’t seen an increase in structure fires occurring.

“It’s likely that we’ve seen structure fires that have unfortunately resulted in greater damage.”

The CBD fire is the third structure fire in Darwin this month.

On June 9, police were investigating the circumstances around a devastating Woolner fire that tore through Carcom Installations and surrounding businesses.

A Moil property was engulfed in flames last week, with fire investigators saying the building was “uninhabitable”.

Police are still investigating the fire, with nothing being ruled out at this time.
