Darwin based photographer and author Louise Denton’s upcoming book titled Discovering Natural Northern Territory, set to hit shelves in April, is the ultimate guide to the NT’s parks, reserves, outback and wetlands.

The book, designed for nature lovers looking to explore, is not only filled with amazing photos taken by Ms Denton, but also maps of trails and camps as well as summaries of the areas’ flora and fauna.

Ms Denton, a landscape and nature photographer born in the UK, has called Darwin home for the past 15 years after falling in love with the area while travelling through as a backpacker.

After being approached about the book by Australia Geographic she said she wanted to create something that hadn’t been done before.

“It’s basically a guidebook that is literally just focused on all of the Northern Territories natural areas,” she said.

“There’s nothing like that, that exists on the market at the moment.

“I think anyone who comes to the Northern Territory is here to explore our nature and outback and all of the beautiful things that we’ve got to offer.

“My inspiration was to share with everyone how great the Northern Territory is and this book is basically the perfect way to do it.”

Ms Denton’s job while putting together the book was, quite literally, to visit and catalogue some of the Territory’s most remarkable locations.

A gig she said had her pinching herself at times.

“So last year, I visited the last couple of spots that I needed to get to, which was East Arnhem Land and up to the Cobourg Peninsula,” she said.

“Obviously, they’re very remote areas. So there was a lot of carrying extra fuel and supplies and all that sort of stuff. So, I actually took my laptop up with me and bought myself a new solar panel set up.

“Some days, I would be off exploring and photographing during the day, and then I would just literally sit there in the evening and write the content.

“I am doing that for work, I am pretty lucky. I did have moments where I’m sort of sitting on a bench and there’s monitor lizards walking past me, which is pretty cool.”

Having spent plenty of time exploring places closer to Darwin, like Litchfield National Park, Berry Springs and Kakadu, working on the book meant Ms Denton got to visit some of the more remote places.

But, now that she has seen all that the NT has to offer, what is the favourite place in the Territory?

“I get asked this so much and I can’t pick one because I love it all,” she said.

“I do love Nitmiluk National Park, down outside Katherine, that’s got a lot of variety, and the infrastructure is really well set up, which makes it a lot easier to access places that are spectacular.

“Larapinta trials or the hike to Larapinta, I did that not last year, but the year before and that is just stunning. A lot of sunlight and mountain camps up there.

“I just love it all, and everywhere in the Territory has got something special. I can’t pick just one.”

Discovering Natural Northern Territory is due for release April 1 and published in conjunction with Australian Geographic.
