A Top End liquor with a unique twist in the ingredients list has won the top gong for Australian gin.
Seven Seasons Green Ant Gin won the Australian Gin category for the 2023 Decoded Spirits awards.
AFL legend and co-founder of Seven Seasons Daniel Motlop said his family was honoured to have received the award.
“We started as a small harvesting business that wanted to help teach everyday Australians about the abundance of native foods we have right on our doorstep,” he said.
“Winning this award helps us showcase our amazing ingredients and our story of the seven seasons.”
Mr Motlop said it was his dream to create a company that celebrated the learning, culture and ingredients from the Top End.
“Our Larrakia family started harvesting the green ants three or four years ago and created the gin,” he said.
“By employing local harvesters, we have been able to create sustainable jobs for hundreds of Aboriginal people and their payments flow back into supporting their communities, which is really what is important.”
He said his brother Shannon ran the harvesting operations throughout the Top End.
The brand is known for its use of “the world’s oldest new ingredients”, several of which are also found in the brand’s bush apple gin and native yam vodka.
