THIS shocking video shows how two young thieves blatantly stole about 50 hunting knives and machetes from a Berrimah camping store.
Camping World owner Kevin Thomas said he was left fuming when he arrived at work on Wednesday morning and discovered his business had been broken into for the second time in four weeks.
CCTV footage shows two masked youths broke in at about 1am and spent about an hour ransacking the store and left with a bag full of items.
“They smashed through our front window and cleared out a couple counters that were full of knives and machetes,” he said.
“They took more than 50 of them, which range from hunting knives with four inch blades and 12-inch pig stickers to machetes 18 inches long.
“They could do a lot of damage with those knives and they’re concealable as well.”
Mr Thomas believes the thieves are the same group who broke into the store previously.
“They look similar and they came in the same way and everything,” he said.
“But this time it’s very worrying because they’re out walking the streets with some substantial weapons.”
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said he was disappointed to hear about the incident.
“We have excellent police in the Northern Territory. They will find the perpetrators that did that and they will face the consequences through the courts,” he said.
“If you do the wrong thing you will absolutely face a consequence and we know that from our incarceration rate, both at Don Dale and Holtze adult correctional facility, so you will absolutely face a consequence.”
Mr Thomas urged the government to crack down harder on youth crime.
“The break-ins are absolutely gutting and it’s happening at a time when businesses can’t afford this,” he said.
“I’ve been writing letters madly to all the politicians regarding the new youth justice statement which basically sidelines the police.
“Eva Lawler basically told me a breach of bail won’t be a criminal offence in the future, they’ll just go back to court, reinstate the bail and nothing will change.
“Theses politicians need to start standing up and give the police the power to act and make the judges hand down tough justice for reoffenders.”
