Two men have been charged over the assault of a 31-year-old man in Shadforth Ln in the early hours of Saturday morning.
NT Police said man was bashed after two men intervened in his argument with girlfriend.
The patient is in the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital and today remains in a critical condition.
The man, 31, was assaulted by the two men on Saturday morning behind Wisdom Bar & Cafe and the Darwin City Hotel, where he was left unconscious.
A NT Police spokeswoman said a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man had been charged over the incident.
“The 20-year-old male has been charged with one count of recklessly endanger life; one count of serious harm,” she said.
“The 22-year-old male has been charged with one count of recklessly endanger life; one count of serious harm; one count of possession of dangerous drug.
“Both have been remanded in custody until 9.30am tomorrow.”
On Saturday, St John Ambulance duty manager communications Rob Webster said the alleged victim had been taken to hospital with head injuries.
“Between 3.20 and 3.30 this morning St John Ambulance have tended to a male, approximately 30 years old,” he said.
“He has been transported to hospital in a critical condition with head and other injuries.”

The NT News understands the man was checked into a nearby hotel for one night only and family had come to pick up his belongings from the hotel on Saturday, following the incident.
Shadforth Ln was blocked off for a number of hours on Saturday as a crime scene was established and police investigated the incident before opening up again about 11am.
About a dozen evidence markers had been set up in a 10 sqm crime scene on Shadforth Ln, as a Hungry Jacks bag lay just outside the crime scene.
Remnants of a plastic syringe were also marked by an evidence marker.
