A MAN accused of running over a 15-year-old girl while doing a “reverse doughnut” at the Casuarina Beach carpark has pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving causing serious harm.

Camden Wilkinson, 19, faced the first day of his trial in the Supreme Court on Monday following the incident in July last year which left the girl with injuries requiring surgery.

Prosecutor Tami Grealy said it was the Crown’s case that Wilkinson drove the girl — who cannot be named — and another man and a second teenage girl from Casuarina Senior College to the Rapid Creek footbridge on the evening of July 11 where they all got out.

Ms Grealy said after the two men threatened to leave the girls behind, Wilkinson reversed the Hyundai Getz out of the carpark and then drove off as if to leave before stopping and reversing back to where the girl was standing.

Ms Grealy said the girl was climbing back into the car with the door still open when Wilkinson started “reversing at speed, turning to do a reverse doughnut” causing her to fall out and under the wheels.

“(She) will describe opening the (rear) driver’s side door and being halfway in the car when the accused was reversing,” she said.

“(She) will tell you that she had her left hand on the driver’s headrest from behind but didn’t have a good grip with that hand and with the other hand she held the door.

“She recalls losing her grip and then blacking out, the next thing she recalls is waking up on the floor in the accused’s arms.”

Ms Grealy said Wilkinson later told police the girl “opened the door and got out” while he was reversing.

“The accused said in that interview with police that (she) got into the car and (the other girl) walked off so he reversed out while he was waiting for (her) to come back,” she said.

“The accused says he put his left hand down on the wheel and was reversing in a circle when (the girl) opened the door and got out, he heard her say ‘Stop’ but too late, she was under the wheels of the car.”

Wilkinson’s lawyer, Julia Ker, did not make an opening address to the jury.

The trial continues before Justice Dean Mildren on Tuesday.
