EARLIER: Police are treating a woman’s death as suspicious after an alleged aggravated assault at a Palmerston home

The incident took place in Cornwallis Cct, Gray, about 9pm on Thursday.

A 34-year-old man was on Thursday in custody in relation to the 29-year-old woman’s death.

Police and St John Ambulance paramedics were not able to save the woman – who was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police confirmed that the two people knew each other but would not say what their relationship was.

Major Crime Unit detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kieran Wells said an autopsy was being conducted that would determine if the woman had died from injuries sustained during the alleged assault.

He said the crime scene, which was in the “vicinity of a residential complex” on the street, had been fully processed – with investigators finding several items of interest.

“The scene has been thoroughly processed, a number of items of interest have been located and seized, they will be subject to analysis,” he said.

Acting Sen-Sgt Wells said witnesses had been spoken to but they were asking for others to come forward if they had any information surrounding the incident.

“This investigation is very much in its preliminary stages, it’s a suspicious death, we have to be very thorough and very objective, I can’t make further comment on specific information that has been provided to us or who’s provided it,” he said.
