Bikie sentenced over jail bashing

VIOLENT Rebels bikie Shannon Althouse is a changed man who wants to spend the rest of his time behind bars helping troubled kids turn their lives around, a court has heard.

Althouse appeared in the Supreme Court by video link from Alice Springs prison on Thursday, where he was sentenced to four years jail for the December 2017 revenge bashing of drug syndicate snitch Adam Lindsay Lyons.

Defence lawyer Marty Aust said Althouse wanted to share his story with troubled kids as a warning about where a life of crime can lead.

“Every person has a moment at which they have a final reflection, at which they say, ‘I know I’m staring down the barrel of double digits (in jail) but I want to get out and contribute to society’,” Mr Aust said.

Mr Aust said Althouse was determined to “find some good out of the life that he has lived”.

Justice Jenny Blokland said security camera footage of Althouse bashing Lyons was “sickening to watch”.

Althouse set upon Lyons just two days after Justice Blokland sentenced him for directing a hatchet and machete attack on rivals.

She said there was then a “mere glimmer of hope” for Althouse’s rehabilitation, given his long association with the Rebels, which she described as a “thoroughly discredited criminal organisation”.

Lyons, a drug courier, helped the police investigation into multi-millionaire drug syndicate boss Shaun Higgins, and was widely known in the prison system as a snitch.

Justice Blokland said Althouse bashed Lyons to “mete our some sort of punishment or revenge”.

In a victim impact statement, Lyons said he was anxious and fearful for his safety even when he is eventually released from jail.

“No one should have to live like that,” Justice Blokland said.

Lyons said his injuries were not properly treated and a broken finger he suffered during the attack had not healed properly.

A court-ordered report from corrections authorities showed Althouse had a history of making threats towards other prison officers and staff at Holtze Prison, but noted a change in attitude since he was moved to Alice Springs prison.

Justice Blokland said it was time for Althouse to step back and think about how he can contribute to society.

“Your association with the Rebels has brought you years of imprisonment,” she said.

“I can only hope that you will sever those ties.”

Althouse will be eligible for parole in 2023.

His sentence expires in 2027.
