DISGRACED businessman George Manolas will spend at least another six months in jail after admitting to stealing more than $440,000 from his friend and business partner Amir Heydarpour.

Manolas was found guilty at trial of stealing $170,000 from Heydarpour, who was his partner in the Casuarina business Bar Zushi.

Following an unsuccessful trip to the High Court, Manolas pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to stealing another $270,000 from Heydarpour and had another year added to his six-year sentence on Tuesday.

In extending Manolas’s previous three-year non-parole period by six months, Justice Dean Mildren said Heydarpour had been unable to say goodbye to his dying mother or attend her funeral as a result of Manolas’s betrayal.

“He was extremely hurt that a person whom he had known and trusted for more than 25 years had stolen the money and that you had shown no remorse for what you have done,” he said.

The court heard Manolas will almost certainly be taken into immigration detention if granted parole and deported back to this native New Zealand after 38 years in Darwin.
