Man charged with starting suspicious bushfires in Darwin

A 27-year-old man has been charged with starting a series of bushfires in the greater Darwin area last year, police have said.

A man has been charged with starting a series of bushfires in the greater Darwin area last year, police have said.

Police said the 27-year-old has been remanded in custody on 17 charges of causing a bushfire.

In a statement police said he was arrested yesterday after serious crime squad detectives executed two search warrants on homes in Darwin River.

Police said the arrest is the result of an operation established in September to investigate suspicious bushfires in the greater Darwin area and involved the serious crime squad, NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT.

The alleged offender is due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

NT Police said all suspicious bushfires would be investigated and public assistance was invaluable.
