LEAKED footage from inside the Don Dale youth detention centre reveals the moment that sparked last year’s riot which resulted in the destruction of parts of the facility.
The footage, leaked to the ABC, shows a detainee snatching a guard’s keys which were then used to open cell doors and release other inmates on November 6.
The video also shows heavily armed riot police aiming their weapons at unarmed youths during their efforts to quell the disturbance.
Detainees are also seen arming themselves with star pickets and using angle grinders to cut their way through fences in the detention centre before being tear gassed by police.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said while he hadn’t seen the footage the police had his support.
“I think it’s important never to be a Monday night coach,” he said.
“There are oversight measures in place, from the Children’s Commissioner to the Ombudsman.”
