PRISONER Jermaine Austral has been caught more than 1600km away from the Alice Springs prison he escaped after 20 days on the run from authorities.

Austral was arrested by NSW Police in the country town of Broken Hill on Wednesday in an allegedly stolen car on the Barrier Highway.

A NSW Police spokesman said Austral was in the stolen car with three other males who tried to evade police twice.

Austral, aged 20, is expected to be extradited back to the Northern Territory today.

Austral is alleged to have stolen the car of some tourists north of Alice Springs in the days after he escaped from prison.

Police spotted the allegedly stolen car at 5pm and pursued the vehicle.

A second pursuit took place through the Broken Hill Township, with road spikes deployed on Nicholls Street, Broken Hill.

Police called off the pursuit and the four men, including Austral, ran from the car.

The spokesman said Austral was arrested nearby and was taken to Broken Hill Police Station.

Police are still searching for the remaining three men.
