A FORMER model who stabbed a man in the heart after a night out drinking at Monsoon’s has walked from court on a suspended sentence.

Cindy Anne Baker, 24, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to negligently causing serious harm to the Stuart Park man after meeting him at the nightclub on January 3.

The court heard Baker was one of a group of people who went back to the victim’s home in the early hours of the morning where they continued to drink spirits until about 5am.

At one point, Baker “made romantic advances” toward the victim, which were rebuffed, before the victim went into his room with another woman.

When he came back out to ask the group to keep the noise down, an intoxicated Baker became fearful of him and hid behind a couch.

At about 5am, the victim asked Baker to leave following “a loud disturbance”, at which point Baker said “You’re trying to kill me” and stabbed him to the chest. After another man disarmed Baker and asked her why she stabbed the victim she replied “I didn’t mean to” and ran to a neighbouring unit.

As a result of the stabbing the victim suffered severe internal bleeding and had to be rushed to hospital for lifesaving surgery.

In suspending Baker’s two-year and three-month prison sentence, Justice Peter Barr said he did not accept she genuinely believed the victim was trying to kill her.

“I note that the victim had earlier rejected your romantic advances, whether that rejection was still playing on your mind, I do not know,” he said.

As a condition of her release, Justice Barr ordered Baker to attend a 12-week residential program at the Sunrise rehabilitation centre.
