THE trial of former top cop and accused rapist Peter Bravos could run for up to four weeks, the Supreme Court has heard.

Bravos resigned from his role as NT Police assistant commissioner in June, shortly after he was committed to stand trial on four historical rape charges dating back to 2004 and 2006.

In a brief hearing in the Supreme Court on Friday, Justice Judith Kelly said the trial, due to start on April 20, was set down for four weeks, which she described as a “very long time”.

But Crown prosecutor Tami Grealy said there was a chance the proceeding would be wrapped up more quickly.

“It’s difficult to say and perhaps we’ll be in a better position to oblige your honour after the prerecords which are listed in January and February,” she said.

“There are some issues that may take time to canvass.”

Ms Grealy also flagged that there would likely be an application by the defence to separate out one or more of the charges ahead of the trial.

The court has previously heard as many as 50 witnesses could be called to give evidence, many of whom are current and former police officers.

Bravos did not appear in court on Friday after his bail was extended in August on a $500,000 surety guaranteed by his wife.
