NT POLICE assistant commissioner Peter Bravos has been committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court on four counts of rape.

The charges relate to alleged sexual assaults by the 52-year-old against two separate women dating back to 2004 and 2006.

Prosecutor Nick Papas submitted a brief of evidence to the court that included details of one of the alleged assaults in which the alleged victim recounted feeling a hand on her breast and something hold up her dress.

Other snippets from the brief read to the court revealed the woman said she then “ended up on the grass” on the Darwin Esplanade where one of the alleged rapes took place.

Local Court Judge John Neill formally granted Bravos bail on a $1000 surety before the matter is heard in the Supreme Court for the first time next month.

In giving evidence, barrister Georgia McMaster earlier told the court she took one of the women’s complaints to then-Public Disclosures Commissioner Brenda Monaghan and former Attorney-General John Elferink but yesterday repeatedly denied ever having represented herself as acting for the complainant.

Under cross examination from Bravos’s lawyer, John Lawrence SC, Ms McMaster agreed “it could look like that because I had people confiding in me” and that it would have been “quite an improper thing to do”.

But she said she had sought legal advice from another senior lawyer “confirming my legal position”.

“I at no time told any person that I was acting for them and that just confirmed it,” she said.

Prior to the hearing, Bravos had been on sick leave from his role as Assistant Commissioner for People and Capability, a position which included oversight of professional standards, police recruitment and training.

NT Police yesterday confirmed Bravos remained employed in his six-figure role and was still on sick leave.

A date for Bravos’s trial is yet to be set.
