AN otherwise healthy young man died alone on his best mate’s kitchen floor after imbibing a dangerous concoction of drugs known as “purple drank” during a Triple J Hottest 100 countdown party last year, an inquest into his death has heard.

The body of Fazan Khan, 22, was found on the kitchen floor of a house at Leanyer the morning after the party, having succumbed to a fatal combination of “purple drank”, alcohol and MDMA.

“Purple drank”, also known as “lean”, is a highly addictive mixture of prescription drugs and soft drink, which is especially dangerous when consumed at the same time as alcohol, counsel assisting the coroner, Peggy Dwyer, said.

Ms Dwyer said Mr Khan, a motor trimmer, developed a problem with the misuse of drugs before he died, having injured his back at work in 2017.

Mr Khan had been at the party from around midday on January 27, 2018.

By the time one of Mr Khan’s friends, who was hosting the party, found his body around 10.15am the next morning, he had been dead “for some time”.

The friend, whose name is suppressed, said guests including he and Mr Khan took MDMA during the party and that he saw Mr Khan drinking Bundaberg Rum.

By 6pm, Mr Khan had vomited on the back lawn but afterwards reassured his friends he was fine.

The friend told the inquest he and Mr Khan had grown up together in Darwin and were “like brothers”.

He said he didn’t think Mr Khan’s drug use posed a risk of serious injury or death.

Detective Sergeant Paul Morrisey said Mr Khan’s internet search history included drug-related material.

Among the last searches Mr Khan made, just before midnight was for “what to keep you going hard after a big party”, Sgt Morrisey said.

Coroner Greg Cavanagh told Mr Khan’s friends who had been at the party with him, and who will give evidence: “Guys, look, this is not a trial. I just want to hear what happened at the party. You’re not in any trouble.”

The inquest continues.
