CRIMINAL Lawyers Association of the NT president Marty Aust has accused the Opposition of waging a “plainly political fear campaign” over youth bail amendments.
Deputy Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro this week claimed the changes would mean young offenders on charges for all but the most serious violent crimes would “automatically” get bail.
Mr Aust said discretion would still rest with the judge.
“The reason why children and adults are entitled to bail is because they are presumed innocent,” he said
“Because jail or detention is a punishment of last resort and is really just a warehouse with almost no needs-based professional medical rehabilitation available.”
Linking bail changes to increases in crime was “pure propaganda”, Mr Aust said.
“Tough on crime is a phrase that neither reduces crime nor promotes safety.
“Locking up children, in fact, does the opposite and creates dangerous criminals through dehumanisation, hopelessness and lack of opportunity to move forward.”
