THE Northern Territory’s new draft Aboriginal Justice Agreement will see the reintroduction of community courts in the NT.
Under the community court model, indigenous elders will help judges determine punishments for offenders.

The agreement, released on Tuesday, aims to reduce reoffending and imprisonment rates among Aboriginal Territorians through initiatives including the expansion of “non-financial” options to pay fines and reform of the Bail and Parole acts.
Aboriginal Justice Unit director Leanne Liddle said the draft agreement was a “watershed moment” for the NT.
“It the first time we’ve seen Aboriginal people in communities properly consulted using culturally competent processes,” she said.

Attorney-General Natasha Fyles said Aboriginal Territorians made up about 85 per cent of the NT’s prison population, up from 84 per cent when Labor came to government in 2016.
The agreement is open for public comment until March 2020.
