A Katherine councillor is seeking legal advice, declaring she will “get back up again” after being hit with a string of sanctions by her own team.

In a public statement on Thursday, Katherine Town Council announced Councillor Amanda Kingdon had been slapped with a trio of sanctions in response to breaching Code of Conduct and Social Media Policy, understood to have occurred over several months.

The sanctions adopted by KTC include that over the next 12 months Councillor Kingdon must remove social media pages with the title of ‘councillor’ and KTC references, that Councillor Kingdon will not be supported to individually represent the council at functions, and that Councillor Kingdon be removed from her current responsibilities of representing council on committees.

Under the Local Government Act, councillors are subject to 12 Code of Conduct requirements, which, if contravened, can lead to a member being directed to undergo training, mediation or counselling.

The details of Councillor Kingdon’s contraventions were not publicised, however, KTC maintained the ruling was in the “best interests” of the council.

“The council’s decision was not taken lightly, but the elected members must act in the best interests of allowing the Council to operate efficiently, effectively, and ethically.”

Within hours of the announcement, Ms Kingdon took to social to declare that she would “finish the race”.

“I stood for council to be a voice and represent my community I call home for 25 years,” she said.

“I will always serve my community to the best of my ability, I speak the truth and I stand up for what is right.

“If you knock me down I will get back up again and finish the race.”

On Saturday, Ms Kingdon told the NT News she would not make further comment until she had engaged her lawyer.
