CORONAVIRUS safety rule-breakers can now be slapped with fines of more than $5000 in the NT under tough new rules announced by the government on the day borders reopen.
Effective immediately NT Police will be able to slap self-quarantine breachers with fines of $5056, up from $1106.
The fines for businesses which breach their COVID-19 safety management plan, don’t provide signage for physical distancing or don’t supply hand sanitiser can also be hit with fines of $25,280 up from $5530.
From today, people entering the Territory from Victoria or greater metropolitan Sydney will go into mandatory supervised quarantine at facilities like Howard Springs.
Anyone in self-quarantine not from a hotspot are free to leave but those from Victoria or greater metropolitan Sydney must complete their full 14 days.
“We have tough borders, tough quarantine rules, and tough consequences for rule-breakers,” Chief Minister Michael Gunner said.
“Let’s be honest, we’ve all let our habits slip a bit, but now we need to get back in the habit and stay safe.
“We’ve stayed safe by the being the best, so let’s keep being the best.
