City of Palmerston has appointed long-time local government figure Andrew Walsh as its latest chief executive, with the city’s deputy mayor labelling the fresh hire as an “ideal fit” for the position.

Mr Walsh – the current chief executive of West Arnhem Regional Council, where he leads a team of more than 200 staff and manages an annual budget of $41m – will begin his new role as chief executive of the City of Palmerston effective March 10.

Mr Walsh brings more than 13 years of public sector leadership and holds a number of professional certifications in change management and leadership.

According to a spokesman at the City of Palmerston, Mr Walsh will oversee a broad range of essential services and programs, as well as direct strategic priorities.

Palmerston’s Deputy Mayor Mark Fraser said he was “thrilled” to welcome Mr Walsh to the position.

“Andrew’s proven ability to lead local government organisations, along with his deep commitment to community engagement and delivering outstanding governance, makes him the ideal fit for Palmerston’s future,” he said.

“His leadership will help build on the successes of City of Palmerston and position us for even greater achievements in the years to come.”

Mr Walsh said he was honoured to be appointed as the chief executive.

“I look forward to working closely with Council and the community to deliver the City’s vision, ensuring that Palmerston continues to be a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable place to live, work, and visit, and most importantly, a Place for People,” he said.

Nadine Nilon, City of Palmerston’s current general manager for infrastructure, will serve as interim chief executive from January 13 until Mr Walsh’s commencement.

This follows the departure of present interim chief executive Amelia Vellar, who began her role in September last year after long-time CEO Luccio Cercarelli was announced as the NT Government’s head of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development.
