Jess Clough loves two-year-old pup Beau and would be devastated if he went missing.
But as a responsible pet owner, Ms Clough said her beloved pooch was registered with the City of Darwin Council.
“I think it’s just really important to promote responsible pet ownership. Registration is a great start,” she said.
“It supports the council, and that goes back into the community, or the resources it provides, and I also think it gives this peace of mind knowing that when accidents happen you’ll be reunited with your fur baby.”
Kevin Hubble and Jen Marshall shared their love for three-year-old greyhound Mack.
Mr Hubble said it was pets like Mack that never went astray.
“We didn’t realise how loving greyhounds were until we got him, so it’s so important that we get our pets registered so that if they get lost, they’ll bring them back to us,” Mr Hubble said.
Registering your pet can be done online, at any Australia Post or at the Civic Centre in the Darwin CBD.
Pet owners who fail to register their pets by September 1 will face fines for owning unregistered animals.
Owners of registered animals receive benefits including no charge to have their animal released back to them the first time they are picked up by City of Darwin rangers and free access to home consultations with animal education officers, monthly animal workshops and dog walking groups.
People new to Darwin must get their pets registered and microchipped within a month of arriving.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatkalis said having registered and microchipped cats and dogs was beneficial for residents and the community.
“If an animal gets lost, we want to reunite the pet with its owner as soon as possible - microchipping and registration helps,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“Do the right thing, register your pet and it will save a lot of stress if they ever go missing.”
