Five new roads in Marrara will pay homage to five iconic Territorians after nine Darwin councillors threw their support behind the iniative.
At the first City of Darwin ordinary meeting of the year on Tuesday, nine councillors unanimously backed the move.
The subject site, formally known as the Malak and KOA Caravan Parks, was rezoned to a low-medium density residential and public open space in September 2021, with stage one of the subdivisions being approved in August 2022.
The five proposed road names – Kennons, Jeffs, Kemp, Boubaris and Ludwig – were selected by Marrara Gardens Pty Ltd and aim to remain consistent with the Marrara location and commemorate notable Territorians for their community contributions.
Audrey Kennon, who celebrated her 100th birthday in 2019, was a pioneer of women’s golf in the Northern Territory and was awarded the Order of Australia in 2005 for her outstanding contribution to women’s golf.
Christine Jeffs, who passed away in 2020, was an internationally recognised triathlete and swimmer, winning the triathlon at the 1994 Honda Masters Games in Alice Springs, the USA World Masters 10km swim, and three gold medals at the Masters Games in Melbourne.
Keith Kemp, who died in 2016 aged 91, was a much loved and active member of the hockey and football community.
His honours include an Order of Australia Medal, Life Member of the Darwin Hockey Association and Hockey NT, including an induction into the NT Hall of Champions in 2006.
Matthew Boubaris, who died in April 2021, spent 15 years playing soccer; locally, nationally and internationally, and was awarded the FIFA Recognition Award for his contributions.
Finally, Sadie Ludwig, who died in January 2013, was an accomplished multi-sport athlete and union advocate, and was awarded the Sports Medal by former Prime Minister John Howard.
The subdivision is expected to deliver 77 residential lots and two open space lots in stage one, and between 55-60 lots in stage two.
The road ownership will be handed to City of Darwin following the completion of the subdivision.
Further details will be discussed at the next council meeting on February 25.
