SHOCKED witnesses have spoken on the tragic death of their one-year-old neighbour, with one recounting the moment a passing motorist stopped to try to save the boy.

A close neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said her husband was home cleaning up their front yard when he heard the commotion outside the Charles St house.

The man walked to the footpath to see a passing motorist stopped in the middle of the road, trying to get the attention of a driver in a Toyota Prado who had just run over a child.

The driver was the one-year-old victim’s grandmother.

“He saw him lying there,” the woman said, tearing up.

“We would never have expected this to happen.”

The witness said the grandmother then got out of her car, scooped up the little boy and ran inside.

Moments later she ran back outside and piled him into the same car.

It is understood the little boy ran out of the house as his grandmother was leaving, and was unaware her grandson was outside near the vehicle.

The grandmother rushed him to hospital, but he sadly died.

Police set up a crime scene and worked at the scene until about 11pm.

Children’s toys were scattered across the yard at the Charles St house.

The neighbour said they had witnessed multiple young children at the address, where they believed an “extended family” lived.

She said they didn’t have much to do with the residents who lived in the property, which was owned by the Department of Housing.

Another neighbour, who had lived in the same Charles St house for 25 years, said she had seen the little boy multiple times, but never interacted with the family.

Police are investigating.

District duty officer Senior Sergeant Brett Smith said police established a crime scene at the house and around the vehicle they drove to the hospital.

A crime scene was set up around the Charles St house but police were not at the property on Wednesday.

“Medical staff did everything they possibly could,” Sergeant Smith said.

“Forensic Crash Unit and Child Protection and Investigation Unit are now investigating.”

Sergeant Smith said it was too early in the investigation to determine what happened or whether charges will be laid.

Police were not at the scene on Wednesday morning but a Pink toy bike was by the front gate. Toys were also scattered under the garage and on the driveway.

The tragedy comes just four months after an 18-month-old girl died after being struck by a car in her Mount Louisa driveway.

She was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
