Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said she was not hopeful there will be any change from Channel 9 head office over the axing of its Darwin newsroom.
Ms Finocchiaro has written to Channel 9 executives urging them to reconsider their controversial decision.
Staff in the Darwin newsroom were told Wednesday of their bulletin shutdown, leaving them shell-shocked.
Just one reporter and a cameraman remains and Darwin will no longer have its own local bulletin, but instead Darwin will receive the Queensland nightly bulletin.
“We’re continuing an open dialogue with Channel 9 executives,” the Chief Minister said.
“I expressed our disgust at this shock decision and where this obviously leaves the Territory.
“They’ve cited commercial realities for them, but we’re continuing discussions.
“I’m not hopeful there’ll be any change from channel Nine.
“Nine have certainly indicated to me that this is a commercial reality for them.
“It is unfortunate and we’re certainly incredibly disappointed.”
Channel 9’s decision has been roundly condemned by Territory political leaders and the viewing public.
Darwin Mayor Kon Vatskalis was so incensed he called on Territorians to axe channel Nine from their homes.
“Well Channel 9 since you think Territorians are not that important to cater for with news I think it’s time for Territorians to turn their back to you and speak with their feet,” he said.
“No more Channel 9 in our home.”
Opposition Leader Selena Uibo also weighed in urging Nine to reconsider its decision.
“For 43 years Nine News has delivered trusted and timely news to Territorians,” she said.
“I urge Nine News to reconsider this decision as it will leave a significant gap in the Northern Territory’s media landscape.”
