Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has called on the Albanese Government to do more to incentivise living in Australia’s north.

Launching the CLP Government’s Rebuilding the Economy Strategy 2025-2028, Ms Finocchiaro said there was more the federal Government could do to shift the dial to help make the Territory a more attractive place of choice to live and work.

“There is a lot the Federal Government can do other than the maintenance money we receive,” Ms Finocchiaro said.

“I really believe that to develop Darwin and the North we have to have a federal Government that understands that to do that they have to give the North a different proposition, particularly around tax regimes.

“We have not seen increases in the zone tax offset.

“We have to encourage and incentivise people to make them want to live and stay here for the long haul.

“We have been very strong around lifting the cap on international students, we can take more migrants here. By having a larger economy and population growth, we will increase scale, drive cost reductions, enhance services, and improve labour flexibility.”

Ms Finocchiaro launched the Rebuilding the Economy Strategy 2025-28 at a Minerals Council-hosted breakfast attended by more than 100 business people.

The three year strategy has five key priorities

*Making the NT the best place to do business – Cutting red tape, delivering regulatory reform, and ensuring investment confidence.

*Building a bigger, better workforce – Expanding school-to-work pathways, supporting businesses, and attracting skilled workers.

*Delivering for Australia – Strengthening the NT’s role in national economic growth, energy security, and defence.

*Unlocking regional growth – Empowering local businesses, investing in tourism, and strengthening partnerships with Aboriginal communities.

*Connecting the Territory – Improving infrastructure, digital connectivity, and transport links to support business and population growth.

Ms Finocchiaro said the previous Labor Government’s 10 year economic strategy was a “do nothing” plan that delivered little of what it promised.

“Broken promises around projects that never get delivered are not an economic plan,” Ms Finocchiaro said.

She said there was a clear point of difference to what the previous NT government implemented and the initiatives the CLP has put in place since winning government last August.

“We have introduced payroll tax reforms, streamlined project approvals, and refocused infrastructure projects to deliver real outcomes for Territorians,” she said.

“We will actively attract skilled workers, provide incentives for families to stay, and ensure the Territory is once again a place where people want to build their future.

“The Rebuilding the Economy Strategy 2025-28 acknowledges the Territory’s unique competitive advantages, including world-class mineral deposits, abundant water resources, strategic defence importance, strong agricultural and tourism sectors, and trade positioning.”
