A MAN who inflicted brutal domestic violence on his wife in Alice Springs prevented her from receiving medical treatment at the hospital, a court has heard.

The woman was too scared to report the incident to police straight away but eventually made a statement with the support of domestic violence workers.

The offender, who can’t be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to breaching a domestic violence order and causing serious harm.

At the time of the offending in November 2019, the offender was driving with his wife in Alice Springs and became angry that she had lost a set of keys.

The offender pulled over on the side of the road near the Gap View Hotel and began hitting his wife’s head and arm with a torch.

The victim was crying and screamed out in pain but the offender continued his attack with blood running down the victims face.

Over the following week the woman was still in pain from a fracture in her arm but the offender refused to take her to the hospital for treatment.

The offender eventually took her to the hospital but told her not to tell anyone what happened.

The offender was arrested by police for an unrelated matter and the victim was finally able to make a complaint to police with the help of domestic violence workers.

Justice Peter Barr said a victim impact statement showed the woman was in pain without treatment.

“One of the things she said was that she was in heaps of pain for a week because you had not let her go to the hospital,” he said.

“ … you have a very bad record of physical violence, mostly against female victims, and many of those against your wife.”

The man was sentenced to three years and four months in jail with a non-parole period of two and a half years.
