Victorian man slapped with $5000 fine at Queensland border for no NT entry form

A man visiting the Territory is the latest person to be slapped with a Covid-19 fine for not following procedures.

A VICTORIAN man has been fined at the Queensland border for failing to lodge an NT border entry form.

The 24-year-old man from Victoria was headed towards Queensland yesterday.

When pulled over for a random breath test in the Barkly region, he revealed he had entered the NT by road within the last 28 days, having travelled from Melbourne to Darwin via South Australia, and had not lodged the necessary paperwork to enter the NT.

Police allege he claimed he was unaware of the border entry requirements and had not had a phone connection through his provider for “thousands of kilometres”.

Incident Controller Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said police fined the man after deeming his excuses “unsatisfactory”.

“The onus is on the traveller to be aware of the requirements for entering into other jurisdictions and lodging the correct paperwork.”

The penalty for failing to abide by the chief health officer Directions issued under section 56 of the Public and Environment Health Act 2011 is $5056 for an individual and $25,280 for a business.
