STAFF at Uncles Tavern in Alice Springs are gearing up for a big New Year’s Eve celebration at the 248-person venue.
Diana Sams, general manager of Alice Springs’ Diplomat Hotel, which includes Uncles Tavern, said she was hoping for a big crowd.
“With the Rock Bar and Bojangles closed, I think we’re going to be under the pump,” Ms Sams said. “We’ve got an extended licence until 2am. I’d say we’ll be pretty busy.”

DJ Triton will kick things off at Uncles from 9pm. There will be a limited menu and bar snacks available, plus $10 pizzas after midnight.
Ms Sams said the party would still comply with COVID-19 requirements: “All our patrons are now used to them, and they actually help us to enforce them, which is great.
“We can fit, at the moment, due to COVID restrictions, 248 people inside and outside. And that includes staff.
“But we may actually cap it at less than that, just for congestion at the bar,” she said.
Police Commander Craig Laidler has put revellers on notice, too, saying police will be out in force to catch anyone doing the wrong thing while celebrating.
“Police will have a visible policing presence to ensure community safety and prevent offending,” Commander Laidler said.

“We urge all revellers to enjoy the night and not engage in anti-social behaviour.
“If you’re going to drink, do it responsibly.”
Commander Laidler said police would be targeting drink and drug-driving to prevent road-related harm.
No fireworks displays have been approved for Alice Springs.
Anyone found igniting, discharging or in possession of fireworks could be hit with a $1580 fine.
