Toby Price wins the car category at the Finke Desert Race 2021, makes history as the first person to win both event categories

TOBY Price has made Finke Desert Race history by becoming the first person to win both the bike category and car category at the iconic off-road race.

The race favourite left Apatula at 7.45am on Monday and crossed the finish line in Alice Springs at 8.58am.

The six time winner of the bike category, Price on Sunday rewrote the history books setting a new record time of 1:39:15 as he made his way through Central Australia on four wheels, alongside Navigator Mark Dutton.

The 2021 time was a massive five minutes faster than his 2019 day 1 result.

The desert gods were on Price’s side on his side this year, after he led in 2018 and 2019 on day 1 to then not finish the race.

At 11.45am on Monday, the bikes will embark on the second leg of the Finke Desert Race.

Local Alice Springs hero David Walsh will lead off the bikes as he aims to win back-to-back King of the Desert titles.

Walsh has a 4:23 minute lead on Jack Simpson with a further 33 seconds to Beau Ralston \, but the notoriously difficult race is still an open field with rising stars Rick Ireland and Callum Norton also in with a chance, starting fourth and fifth off the line today.

The first bike is due back in Alice Springs at approximately 2.00pm
