MORE than 250 runners set off on a trail for the West Macs Monster Trail Running Festival over the weekend, but about 80 of them never made it across the finish line.

Festival director Marc Woods said about one third of the participants, who took on trails between five and 231 kilometres, withdrew during their races due to fatigue or injury.

“Some people just say ‘this is next level, what is this?’,” he told the ABC on Sunday.

Elizabeth Woodgate won the 231km monster trail, crossing the finish line with a time of 56:52:02.

Mark Alexander and Matthew Salonovich took out second and third place respectively, clocking in times of 57:41:17 and 59:01:06.

Just three of the 15 runners who started the 231km monster trail finished the race.

The event, which is now in its second year, attracted participants from across the country, include half who travelled from interstate.
