Man dead, two injured during horrific crash at Finke Desert Race

THE wife of Nigel Harris, who was tragically run over and killed by a vehicle at the Finke Desert Race, has expressed her hope that the iconic event continues to run unchanged.

In a touching Facebook post, Sheryl Harris paid tribute to her late husband, who was on a holiday from Canberra after recently retiring.

“Thank you everyone for your kind comments,” she said.

“My husband was a wonderful man, husband, father and grandfather to his beautiful Evelyn and would have been touched by your words.

“My sincere hope is that the driver manages to get over this and that the race continues as is in the future.

“Those would have been his wishes.”

One user commented they had met Mr Harris at the camping grounds and described him as a “wonderful man”.

“Our crew was camped very close to Nigel and we had the pleasure of having him sit with us around the fire and share stories about all his adventures and trips,” he said.

Mr Harris had extended his holiday to take pictures at the race.

He shared dozens of the photos he took of competitors in action during a pre-run at the Finke track to Facebook on Wednesday and Friday.

Instead of asking for payment, Mr Harris wrote a post encouraging people who liked his photos at Finke to consider donating to the ‘The 10 Desert Challenge’, a fundraiser for Beyond Blue.
