WHILE progress for the contentious and long-debated National Aboriginal Art Gallery (NAAG) in Alice Springs has stalled over a disagreement over where it should be built, the first designs for a $200m Indigenous art gallery in Adelaide have been unveiled.

Inspired by Aboriginal temporary shelters, the Aboriginal Art and Cultures Centre (AACC) designs have been unveiled as the future centrepiece of the landmark site.

The site will feature fresh and saltwater reflection pools, an outdoor gallery and amphitheatre and views of nature.

Lower-level galleries and terraced landscapes carved from the earth will provide exhibition and performance spaces, and a gathering area for Welcome to Country ceremonies.

Construction is scheduled to start later this year and the centre is due to open in early 2025.

Meanwhile, a final design and location for the Alice Springs project is yet to be confirmed.

Discussions between the Alice Springs Town Council and NT government about the gallery’s location have stalled progress on the project.

The government has commenced statutory compulsory acquisitions to acquire Anzac Oval to support the development of the NAAG.

On the announcement in March 2019 the SA government had secured $85m in federal funding for their site, questions were raised over wether there was room and enough funding for two national Indigenous art galleries in Australia.
