TERRITORY households and businesses will be able to apply for $12,000 grants to purchase and install solar power systems and batteries under an enhanced government scheme.
The Country Liberal Government will double the initiative from the current $6000 to help Territorians save on their electricity bills and add stability to the grid.
The incentive will be delivered as part of a wider plan for Cheaper, Greener Electricity in the Territory, Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro said on Wednesday.
The plan will ensure grid stability through the rooftop solar initiative, an efficient Power and Water Corporation, affordable costs for consumers and government investment in renewables.

The CLP plan will specifically:
1. Increase the incentives to install batteries with rooftop power from $6,000 to $12,000, necessary for grid stability.
2. Ensure that power and water prices for residential customers are fixed at 2020 levels for four years.
3. Maintain public ownership of Power Water Corporation, Jacana Energy and Territory Generation.
4. Ensure that Power and Water meets or exceeds the requirements of the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) Determination in its first term of Government, lowering network costs and passing on savings to consumers where possible.
5. Allow Territory Generation to invest in renewable energy.
“A CLP Government will make sure Power and Water meets the requirements of the expert Australian Energy Regulator (AER) determination made last year, which has been ignored by the Gunner Government. This could result in a $225 per household electricity cost saving,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.
“To help progress towards 50 per cent renewables by 2030, a CLP Government will also remove the ban on Territory Generation investing in renewables.
“To be serious about renewables, the government owned generation company needs to be deployed for renewable power.”
System reliability and security requirements increase significantly with the introduction of large amounts of renewables.
This is why a Country Liberal Government will task the Utilities Commission to conduct a full cost benefit/analysis on the optimal mix of renewables (as previously announced).
“Our Cheaper, Greener Electricity plan will ensure efficient and sensible management of our power systems to keep costs affordable and reliable for consumers,” Mrs Finocchiaro concluded.
Alice Springs Solergy spokesman, Jhana Cowhan said the extra incentive to get batteries already help local homes and businesses and improve the local skilled labour force.
“Currently the $6000 scheme doesn't really cover the cost of batteries so this larger incentive will cover the whole cost of the battery and installation”.
