A new Child and Family Centre wil be established in Alice Springs later this year thanks to a $2.7 million funding boost.

A NEW Child and Family Centre to be established in Alice Springs will service five Alice Springs town camps thanks to a $2.7 million funding boost.

The Territory Labor Government has partnered with the Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) who will establish and operate the centre for five years.

Using a ‘hub and spoke’ approach, from July this year, TCAC will work with families across the Larrapinta Learning Centre, Hidden Valley Community Centre, Truckies Community Centre, Southern Camps and Northern Camps to connect them to supports through the Child and Family Centre service.

The service will co-ordinate the delivery of support services to children, young people and families and assist them to navigate the local service system to ensure they get the help they need.

Support services families will be able to access maternal and child health, early childhood development and learning and parenting support services.

Operations are planned to commence in August 2021.

Minister for Children Lauren Moss said the centre would be a great asset which “will be well received by the Alice Springs community.”

“Child and Family Centres are key support services in communities - acting as conduits to deliver essential services to children, young people and families and help them navigate the local service system, ensuring they receive the help they need.”

The Alice Springs Child and Family Centre will be the fifth Aboriginal Community Controlled Child and Family Centre established in the Territory, after the government committed to investing $11.4 million across four years to establish 11 additional Child and Family Centres.

Previous Child and Family Centres opened in Katherine (2019), Tennant Creek (2020), Kalkarindji (2020) and Darwin Northern Suburbs (2021).

Child and Family Centres are established and supported through Local Decision Making and TCAC was recommended by the Alice Springs Town Camps associations, and supported by other Alice Springs Aboriginal Controlled Organisations.
